The DC Comic superhero Batman serves as the inspiration for the American animation television series The Batman. Originally shown on Kids' WB on September 11, 2004, and later on Cartoon Network on April 2, 2005, the series was created by Duane Capizzi & Michael Goguen and produced both Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics during the seasons three through five. Early in 2006, all three of the previous seasons of the program would be the only ones available on the old network. During its tenure, The Batman took home six Daytime Emmy Awards.  

Although it maintained its own continuity, many aspects of earlier Batman storylines such as those derived from comic books, movie series, and animated programs such as Batman: The Animated Show in the DC Animated Universe were appropriated and modified. Character designs were created by Jeff Matsuda, who was also the art director for Jackie Chan Adventures. the Penguin, the joker, Mr. Freeze, the Riddler & Bane are just a few of the comic book villains whose looks were changed for the program by the production crew. Blu-ray and DVD versions are available for all five seasons. A direct-to-DVD movie called The Batman vs Dracula came out in 2005. The Batman Strikes, a spin-off comic, was also given to the Batman!

Bruce Wayne, a multimillionaire playboy, is actually Batman, the masked guardian of Gotham City. Since Batman started combating crime three years before the series began and the power source Gotham City cops don't openly recognize the vigilante's presence, the show concentrates on the early years of his career. Batman and his personal assistant Alfred Pennyworth use advanced technology and a supercomputer to combat crime while operating out of the Batcave, a hidden bunker beneath Bruce Wayne's estate.Although there is less violence in Gotham at the beginning of the initial season, Gotham Chief of Detective Angel Rojas gives his men orders to find Batman. This is the first time that Batman's presence in the series is acknowledged. One of his investigators, Ethan Bennett, feels that the community needs Batman in spite of Rojas' directives. At the beginning of a series, Bennett is helped by Ellen Yin, a new colleague from Metropolis who struggles with her affections for Batman and her dedication to law and order.

Bennett & Yin are both entrusted with catching Batman during season 1. Bruce Wayne is conflicted in this first season between his duties as Batman & his personal life, while Marion Grange, the mayor of Gotham, supports the latter. Bennett becomes Clayface toward the conclusion of the season after getting exposed with the Joker's mutating Joker Putty. While his companion Yin eventually comes to the realization that she was mistaken about Batman and joins forces with him, Clayface is compelled to go into hiding.
