In addition to their Disney+ series What If...?, Marvel Studios Animation was working on a lineup of at least three further series by June 2021. According to reports the following month, these were in different phases of production and would not be ready for launch until not later than 2023. Jeff Trammell is the chief writer of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, which was revealed at a Disney+ Day conference in November 2021. After introducing a distinct cartoon proposal to animation chief Brad Winderbaum and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Trammell was asked to put together the series. Stu Livingston was the episodic director and Mel Zwyer was the associate director.Alongside Trammell, executive producers comprised Feige, Winderbaum, Louis D'Esposito, and DanaVasquez-Eberhardt from Marvel Studios. The term "Marvel Animated Multiverse" was used to describeYour friendly neighborhood spiderman and the various additional projects that were discussed duringMarvel Studios Animation's panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022. 

At the panel, Spider-Man: Sophomore Year, the title of the second season, was revealed. By December 2023, the show had changed its name to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man instead of Spider-man Freshman year, and in January 2025, Trammell stated that it would not only represent one school year for each season.According to Trammell, the show will go into Parker's past before as Spider-Man and the origins of his superhero life. The early Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comic books, as well as earlier Spider-Man animated shows, served as motivation for the creative team. Trammell specifically drew motivation from The Spectacular Spider-Man 2008's character development. He intended for the series to take traditional ideas and characters—like Parker's mentor Norman Osborn and Parker's best buddy Nico Minoru—and use them in novel ways.

The beginning of Spider-Man in Your Friendly Neighborhood As he battles Venom, Spider-Man equates his genesis to mysticism instead of science as in the comics when he witnesses Parker being bitten by a spider which comes out of a vortex made by Dr. Stephen Strange. According to Winderbaum, the show is "so fundamentally Spider-Man" while Parker struggles to balance becoming a superhero, take care of his aunt May, and attending high school. He claimed that by giving auxiliary people important roles, the series' immense cast of characters allowed for unique relations and stakes as well as a focus on the "neighborhood" reflected by the title. Since there is no "house style" at Marvel Studios Animation, the creative team was able to create an animation visual that was separate from other shows like What if..? & X-Men 97.Designers opted to tribute the early The Amazing Spider-Man comic books, mainly those with artwork by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr., as opposed to adopting one of the many distinct approaches to animation employed for the animated Spider-Verse movies. According to Trammell, the series is a "moving comic book" thanks to 3-dimensional cel-shaded animation created through CGCG and Polygon Pictures. Because of the 2D animation technique they had attained in their earlier work, Polygon was selected. According to Trammell, the firm managed to maintain the "characters feeling alive and real, without feeling stiff and mechanical" while nevertheless sticking to their preferred look.Personality art for the series was shown at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con panel conducted by Marvel Studios Animation. In December 2023, a sizzle trailer of Marvel Studios Animation's 2024 series highlighted the series. At Marvel Studios Animation's event at the D23 Expo in August 2024, when Domingo's responsibility as Norman came to light and footage was displayed, Trammell, Thames, and Domingo championed the series.

 A video revealing the release schedule for Marvel Television and Marvel Animation projects until the end of 2025 was broadcast by Disney+ in October, and it featured shots from the series. In the end of  December, after the third season of What If...? concluded, a promo for the upcoming season was published. The series was referred to as "long-awaited" by Toussaint Egan of Polygon and as "hotly anticipated" by Jordan King of Empire. King and Adam Bankhurst of IGN particularly emphasized how the teaser blends modern animation and visuals with vintage Spider-Man connections, such as the theme music and art style. Speaking on the Gizmodo trailer, Justin Carter felt it was "well worth the wait" and that devotees who wished for some "smaller adventures" for Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will enjoy the series.The first two episodes of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will premiere on Disney+ on January 29, 2025. The following eight episodes will be broadcast per week until February 19 in series of two or three. This timeline, as noted by Chris Agar of ComicBook.com, is unusual for a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series.
