Barry Jenkins is the filmmaker of the 2024 American musical movie Mufasa: The Lion King, which was adapted from a script by Jeff Nathanson. In September 2020, it was revealed that work was underway on the prequel for the Lion King, with Nathanson completing an initial version of the script and Jenkins slated to helm. In August 2021, Pierre & Harrison were revealed as the voice cast. Additional casting took place from September 2022 until April 2024. The movie was formally unveiled in September 2022 during the 2022 edition of the D23 Expo announcement, when its final title was disclosed. Because of the 2023 SAG-AF strike, the movie's production slowed down from July 2023. James Earl Jones, he provided the voice of Mufasa in both the original 1994 film & the 1994 remake, is honored in the film.

On December 9, 2024, Mufasa: The Lion King had its debut at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. On December 20, 2024, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released the film in the United States. Simba & Nala have a daughter called Kiara & are expecting another cub sometime after Simba ascends to the throne of the Pride Lands. Simba asks the two of them to look after Kiara while they depart for a place where Nala may give birth. Soon after, Rafiki pays them a visit and chooses to tell them the tale of her grandfather Mufasa and his cunning younger brother Scar, interspersed with color commentary from Timon and Pumbaa. Because their parents, Masego & Afia, believe in a mythological place named Milele, Mufasa is born into a tiny pride. Mufasa's anxiety prevents him from following Afia when a flood occurs; he is carried away and soon encounters Taka, a royal cub, who attempts to protect him from juvenile crocodiles until Queen Eshe, Taka's mother, steps in. Although Taka's parent, King Obasi, chastises Taka for accepting an alien, Eshe grudgingly acknowledges Mufasa as her son. Mufasa and Taka sprint to demonstrate their speed while Obasi threatens to devour the cub.

Taka gives up to ensure Mufasa can be accepted into the pride, even though he lags behind because he is tired. Mufasa and Taka have a close brotherly relationship as they become older. Two white lions invade the country while Eshe is teaching Mufasa how to hunt; Mufasa kills one of them and the other runs away. When Taka notices the attack, he flees in terror. The survivor returns to Kiros, who, together with his sisters Akua and Amara, vows revenge. Kiros is the head of a pride known as the Outsiders, which is made up of lions exiled for having white fur and their dad who had the lion Mufasa murdered. Before pursuing Mufasa & Taka, who flee into a river, the Outsiders massacre Eshe, Obasi and their self-confidence.
