Walt Disney Animation Studios is the producer of the 2024 American animated of music adventure filmMoana 2. Dana Ledoux Miller, David Derrick Jr., & Jason Hand directed the second movie in the Moana series, which was based on a story by Jared Bush and Miller. Hualālai Chung,  Awhimai Fraser, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Gerald Ramsey Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, join the cast, which includes Rachel House, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Auliʻi Cravalho, who all return from the first movie. Three years after the events of the previous movie, it centers on the titular character's reunion with the demigod Maui and the formation of a navigational crew in order to locate the lost island of Motufetu, lift its curse, and reunite the ocean's inhabitants. 4

Originally planned as a Disney+ miniseries, the next installment to Moana was modified into a movie sequel by February 2024. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear take Lin-Manuel Miranda's place as additional songwriters, and Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, who composed and co-wrote the music for the previous movie, returned to do so. On November 21, 2024, Moana 2 made its world debut at the Lanikuhonua Culture Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii. On November 27, it was distributed in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Despite receiving poor reviews from critics, it became the third highest grossing movie of 2024 and outperformed its predecessor. At the 82nd Golden Globes, it received a nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Three years after her adventure with the island goddess TeFiti and the demigod Maui, Moana spends her days searching other islands near her home island of Motunui in the hopes of discovering people who are connected to the ocean. In a vision, her ancestor Tautai Vasa explains why none of those people are connected anymore: the evil storm god Nalo sank a legendary island called Motufetu that connected all the islands down to the ocean's depths in order to gain control over the mortal race. 

Tautai also warns that if Moana is unable to raise Motufetu, the people of Motunui will eventually become extinct. Since he and Nalo had a previous argument, Maui is looking for Motufetu himself, but Matangi, Nalo's enforcer, captures him. Maui is hesitant to call Moana because he thinks she might not live if she arrives to assist. The Kakamora, a group of barbaric pirates who resemble coconuts and whom Moana had previously met, kidnap her and her crew and explain that Nalo's acts against Motufetu had led them to become estranged from their beloved island. Kotu, one of the Kakamora's members, assists the crew in immobilizing a gigantic monster clam that houses Matangi's lair. 

Moana encounters Matangi and discovers that she is unhappy serving Nalo while the group searches for Maui. Before sending Maui and her companions to where Nalo is, Matangi assists Moana in escaping and reuniting with them. Maui warns that attacking Nalo will result in guaranteed death for simple mortals since his world is more deadly than the mortal realm. The gang is ambushed by Nalo's creatures, who destroy their raft and leave them stranded on a remote island. Maui urges Moana to continue even if she starts to lose hope. In order to rebuild Motufetu and halt Nalo, the gang intends to have Maui lift the island in hopes that Moana may touch it now that she has been regenerated.
